Stand for Election to Dunoon Community Council

Community Council Elections will take place on Thursday 20 August 2026, and Dunoon needs local people to step forward.

Dunoon Community Council is the most local level of statutory representation in our town. It provides a voice for residents, represents community concerns to public bodies, comments on planning applications, carries out local surveys, supports community projects, and campaigns on issues that matter to Dunoon and the wider Cowal area.

Over the past four years, Dunoon Community Council has worked on a wide range of local issues, helping ensure that the views of local residents are heard by decision-makers. However, the future of the Community Council now depends on new people coming forward.

A Community Council can only function if there are enough elected members to fill its positions.

Without new members standing for election, Dunoon Community Council will cease to function by the end of 2026.

This would mean the loss of an important local voice on issues affecting our community, including transport, planning, local services, community facilities, environmental concerns, and many other matters that impact daily life in Dunoon.

You do not need previous experience in local government or politics. What matters most is that you care about your community and want to help make Dunoon an even better place to live, work and visit.

To stand as a candidate, you must:

• Be 16 years of age or over on the day of the election. 
• Be resident within the Dunoon Community Council area. 
• Be registered on the Local Government Electoral Register within the Community Council area. 

1. Obtain a nomination pack 
   • Available from Argyll and Bute Council from 5 June 2026. 
   • Forms are also available via the Council's website. 
   • Dunoon Community Council has also made nomination information available through our website:

1. Complete the Nomination Form 
   • Your nomination must be supported by a proposer and seconder, both of whom must be registered electors within the Community Council area. 

1. Complete the Home Address Form 
   • You may choose whether or not your home address is published. 

1. Submit a Candidate Statement (Optional) 
   • Candidates are encouraged to submit a short statement of up to 100 words explaining why they are standing. 

1. Submit Your Papers 

Completed nomination papers must be received by the Returning Officer no later than:
4.00pm on Thursday 25 June 2026
 

• Papers may be submitted by hand, post or email to the Returning Officer at Argyll and Bute Council.

5 June 2026     Nominations Open

25 June 2026 (4pm)     Close of Nominations

20 August 2026      Community Council Election Day
